The Transformative Journey of Gurudiksha

Gurupurnima

During my childhood, I was an avid viewer of Indian Mythology TV serials like Ramayan and Mahabharat. I noticed a common theme in both stories—the presence of Guru-Shishya (Disciple) Parampara, the ancient tradition where every warrior, whether on the side of gods or evil, followed this practice to gain knowledge about all aspects of life. These warriors received Gurudiksha, a sacred initiation, from their Gurus, who they trusted. As a student in school, I considered my teachers as Gurus and myself as their disciples. This belief continued until I attended a meditation camp during my 10th Standard (SSC).

Discovering the Inner Light: The Essence of a True Guru

At the camp, I discovered that a Guru is not just someone who imparts knowledge from the outside but someone who enlightens from within. Their teachings are deeply connected to the inner-being of the disciple. In fact, I realized that a Guru doesn’t merely teach; learning automatically happens in their presence. This left me wondering about the difference between a teacher and a Guru. When I asked my mother, she explained, “The word ‘Guru’ is derived from ‘Gu,’ meaning darkness, and ‘Ru,’ meaning the one who dispels it. A teacher, on the other hand, provides information about the curriculum.” Her answer helped me understand the distinct roles of these two figures.

My Life-Turning Gurudiksha Story: A Glimpse into Divinity

I’d like to share the story of my Gurudiksha, one of the most cherished moments of my life. Let’s delve into this divine experience.

In 2007, after completing the meditation camp, a 45-day meditation practicum was organized at the Meditation Center. During this practicum, an announcement was made about Gurupurnima, a special day when we could receive Gurudiksha from the Founder of the meditation method, whom we reverently called Guru. The mere thought of it sent shivers down my spine and reignited my desire to receive Gurudiksha. My family and I decided to attend Gurupurnima and receive this sacred initiation. Interestingly, in 2007, Gurupurnima was scheduled to be held at Girnar, Junagadh. Around 50-60 of us from the Panvel meditation Center eagerly joined this program, which spanned three days from July 28, 2007, to July 30, 2007.

A Journey to Girnar: The Sacred Ground of Gurupurnima

We booked train reservations from Panvel to Rajkot on the Okha Express. Our departure was scheduled for July 26, 2007, around 9:00 PM. As Gurupurnima drew closer, our excitement reached its peak. Finally, the day of departure arrived, and our group gathered at Panvel Railway Station at 9:00 PM. Due to the rainy season, the train was delayed by nearly 3 hours, and we boarded it around 12:30 AM. We reached our destination, Rajkot, at approximately 11:00 AM. From Rajkot, we took a local shuttle train to Junagadh. We arrived in Junagadh one day prior to the event, on July 27th, and stayed in a lodge near the base of Girnar. Exhausted from the long 15-16 hour journey, we had an early dinner and retired for the night.

Surrendering to the Guidance: The Power of a Discourse

On the day of the event, we arrived at the venue, which was breath-taking! It was located just below the base of Girnar Mountain, surrounded by serene trees and majestic peaks. Only the event attendees were present; there was no general public. The venue, with approximately 3000 participants, had a challenging terrain. The accommodation for the next three days was around 5 km from the event ground, and the kitchen was approximately 1 km away, with the event ground situated in the centre. It was hard to believe that such a place existed near Girnar, where 3000 people gathered to celebrate Gurupurnima. Despite the scattered setup, we were filled with bliss—both from attending Gurupurnima and being in the presence of Girnar Mountain. From the event ground, we could catch a glimpse of the magnificent Shri Dattaguru Temple situated atop Girnar.

Electrifying Moments: Receiving Gurudiksha

The first day commenced with a discourse by Sadguru Shree Shivkrupanand Swami. It was a sight to behold—3000 individuals sitting in rapt attention, absorbed in the discourse. Somewhere amidst the discourse, I dozed off, likely due to the exhaustion from traveling.

On the second day, the day of Gurudiksha, my life took a transformative turn. As I received Gurudiksha from Sadguru Shree Shivkrupanand Swami, I felt a chilling vibration running up my spine, electrifying me. During the meditation that followed, I experienced an overwhelming sense of positivity and a surge of energy unlike anything I had felt before. Words cannot adequately express my emotions during that moment.

Gurupurnima is a celebration of the divine bond between the Guru and the disciple, where life takes on a new direction.

Life Governed by the Guru: Embracing Divine Will

Gurudiksha is believed to be the event where the Sadguru formally accepts you as their disciple, and from that point forward, your life is guided by their divine will. This holds true for me even today. Everything that has happened in my life since then has been by the grace of my Guru. I have no control; every decision, every aspect of my life is a blessing bestowed by my Guru. Without his guidance, I would not be the person I am today.

Gurupurnima: Reflecting on the Transformative Path

As Gurupurnima approaches, I felt compelled to share my experience with you. I sincerely believe that one should never settle until they find their Guru, the one who imparts Gurudiksha. Encountering your Guru is the beginning of a profound journey where your life gradually unfolds and transforms. The changes might be subtle initially, requiring patience and observation.

Wishing You All a Happy Gurupurnima!
