From Noise to Silence: Lessons from My Day of Isolation

Shunya Kutir

Attending the 45-Day Deep Meditation Practicum for the year 2025 was like returning home — not to a physical place, but to my own soul. From January 12th to February 26th, I set out on a journey that words can barely capture. Yet, I’ll try my best to share the essence of those days.

A Perfect Blend of Work and Spirituality

This residential program offered a unique opportunity for working individuals, allowing them to continue their professional responsibilities with a ‘Work From Home’ option. It felt like a perfect balance — pursuing material goals while nurturing the spirit.

Participants could choose from three types of accommodations:

1. Moksha Kutir: A shared space with six participants and attached bathrooms.

2. Ekant Kutir: A private space for one, ensuring solitude with attached facilities.

3. Shunya Kutir: The ultimate experience of solitude. Residents lived in complete isolation for 45 days without stepping outside, and meals were discreetly delivered by volunteers. Devices were optional, but most chose disconnection to experience true silence.

The concept of Shunya Kutir fascinated me. Just the thought of spending 45 days in complete isolation seemed both intimidating and alluring. While I didn’t opt for it this time, I got a taste of it through a 24-hour immersion—an experience I’ll cherish forever.

The Day of Isolation

On February 5th, I woke up at 3:30 AM, meditated at the amphitheater, and completed my morning routine. By 10:15 AM, I stood outside the Shunya Kutir. As I stepped inside, an overwhelming sense of stillness surrounded me. It felt like entering a different realm—a space with no distractions, no expectations, just pure presence.

The volunteers explained the essentials—how meals would arrive, how to reach them if needed, and the guidelines for my stay. Before leaving, they offered a heartfelt prayer for my experience of Shunyata (the state of complete thoughtlessness). I could feel their prayers settle within me, as if a wave of calmness flowed through my entire being.

“Isolation didn’t make me lonely; it brought me closer to myself.”

Moments Beyond Time

With no clocks, no devices, and no external markers of time, I surrendered to the flow. Thoughts came and went, but a deep stillness remained. At one point, I walked around the kutir, touching its walls, taking in its silence. A few spiritual books lay on a small table, but even reading felt secondary to the simple joy of just ‘being.’

By noon, my meal arrived. I ate with full awareness, savoring each bite. It felt as though I was tasting food for the very first time. The act of eating became a meditative experience in itself. Every morsel brought gratitude, reminding me how often we eat without truly appreciating the nourishment it provides.

Post lunch, I lay down for a while, sinking into a state of relaxation. Soon, I felt an intense energy gathering around my navel. It was cold, almost as if ice cubes were resting there. And then, something inexplicable happened—a sensation of release, like a knot untying from within. I lost awareness of my body, yet I was fully conscious. Time faded away.

The Beauty of Silence

The night passed peacefully. Without knowing the exact hour, I woke up in darkness and meditated. The silence around me felt alive, as though the universe itself was breathing. Eventually, the birds began to sing, signaling the arrival of dawn.

The sense of connection I felt was beyond words. It was as if every element of nature was welcoming me to a new day—a day without expectations, without rush. In that moment, I realized how much beauty lies in simply witnessing the world awaken.

At 9:00 AM, the volunteers returned. They asked about my experience, but words failed me. How could I explain something so deeply personal? I managed to share fragments, but much remained unspoken—perhaps because some experiences are meant to be felt, not told.

Gratitude Overflowing

This journey would not have been possible without the unwavering support of my parents, my wife, my friends, and my clients. A special thanks to the volunteers whose selfless service ensured the program ran seamlessly. My heart bows in gratitude to them.
